About this Gateway
This gateway publishes articles describing new R packages and other contributions to R stats applicable to the life sciences. R is the statistical language and environment of choice for many researchers due to the fact that it is open source, platform-independent and allows any user to extend its functionality. Bundling this code together with documentation and test data into an R package makes it much easier to download, use and, importantly, reproduce.
R packages can be incredibly valuable to other researchers. Publishing a citable, peer reviewed article outlining a new package boosts its visibility and enables its creators to receive proper credit for their contribution. The F1000Research publishing platform also preserves the original syntax highlighting and supports article versioning so that the paper can be iterated in line with the code.

Gateway Areas
The R Epidemics Consortium (RECON) is an international network of experts in infectious disease modelling, public health, field epidemiology, and software development aiming to create the next generation of tools for disease outbreak analysis using the R software. Our members design free, open-source packages specifically designed for handling, visualising, and analysing outbreak data using cutting-edge statistical methods, as well as more general-purpose tools for data cleaning, versioning, encryption, and system infrastructure. This gateway area assembles publications presenting RECON packages, as well as case studies showcasing their application to outbreak response situations.
