Enhancing water, energy, and food security in an era of increasing demand, degradation, depletion and climate change: The Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Water, energy, and food are vital resources for human wellbeing. Yet, they are under increased pressure to meet demand from a growing population during worsening insecurity due to depletion and degradation of reserves. These challenges prompted the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. The 17 SDGs are connected and linked to water, food, and energy resources. As the three resources are the most impacted by climate change, they closely link adaptation, climate system, human society, and the environment. The intricate interlinkages between water, energy, and food resources and related relationships with socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems, human development, and sustainable development promote the need for transformational change from the norm. Understanding the link between climate and land cover change dynamics, on the one hand, and water, energy, and food security, on the other, together with transformational change, is a critical area of research.

This collection calls for submissions of systematic reviews, policy briefs, case studies and research papers that address the challenges related to the insecurity of water, food, and energy resources. We welcome submissions from multiple perspectives and disciplines that showcase research findings on resource management and governance strategies towards sustainability in food, water, and energy systems, with feedback and interconnections drawing on diverse methodologies ranging from dynamic system modelling, life cycle assessments, supply chain analysis, statistical modelling, and scenario analysis to qualitative approaches.
