Environmental health is an important determinant of public health, with the
World Health Organisation estimating that 24% of deaths are caused by poor environmental conditions. Consequently, to accomplish
SDG 3 (good health and well-being), the interconnections between environmental and individual characteristics, such as climate change, air pollution and water quality, human behaviour and lifestyle, and health, need to be thoroughly investigated. For example, the interconnections between physical activity and climate change are a quickly emerging topic of research. Some key questions being addressed are how climate change impacts physical activity (e.g., by causing heat stress), and how physical activity impacts climate change and environmental health (e.g., by causing/reducing carbon emissions or by altering the natural environment).
This collection is dedicated to publishing content that explores the interconnections between environmental health and public health through case studies, original research, comments or other formats. It particularly invites studies that have employed a co-production or transformational methodology and report on how such collaborations might have produced a social or public health impact.
