About this Collection
As the volume and variety of academic research have expanded, institutions, funders and publishers have developed systems to evaluate that research and the scholars who undertake it. Research – and researchers – can be assessed and measured for innovation, academic rigor, integrity, openness and impact, among other things. Academic institutions and funding agencies incorporate metrics for these variables into policies and processes that govern grant allocation, promotion, tenure, awards, and other key decisions. Policy frameworks differ markedly across regions and subject areas, with some institutions favoring traditional impact metrics while others look for more holistic solutions to evaluate their researchers and research outputs.

The past decade has seen a great deal of innovation in this space. Movements like the Hidden REF are striving to change the way we assess what constitutes an impactful research output. Researchers produce much more than journal articles and monographs, and new evaluations – both qualitative and quantitative – are evolving to assess these other important contributions. Following on from the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), now in its tenth anniversary year, more recent work on societal impact and community engagement is expanding the way we think about and assess research impact. As open research evolves and gains pace, funders and institutions are beginning to incorporate data sharing and data re-use into their assessment structures.

This collection brings together articles on innovations in research assessment and evaluation across disciplines and around the world. The aim is to encourage a nuanced view of academic research, while enabling fair and responsible evaluation of its quality and impact.
