Addictive disorders stemming from gambling or video game participation have recently been recognised by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition and by the International Classification of Diseases 11th edition. Despite this growing recognition, treatment, research, policy, and public health interventions lag behind those for substance based addictive disorders.
There has also been a growth of interest in gambling mechanics in video games (i.e. loot boxes) and mini games incorporated into gambling machines. These converging areas lead to this Collection that is dedicated to bringing together research that seeks to understand gambling, video gaming, and convergence between them.
We welcome a wide range of contributions. Specifically, we would like to highlight research on developments in treatment, prevention, and policy with gambling and video gaming. Other types of contributions of interest include new technological developments in problem gambling and video gaming such as blockchain games/crypto-betting, hyper-casual games, and interactive stream games. We also welcome contributions on the impact of emerging technology, legislative regulation, social and environmental factors.
The Collection will include research articles, brief reports, methods papers, reviews, theoretical papers, and opinion pieces. Interdisciplinary work, qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods are welcome. We encourage contributions that meet open science standards of open data access and pre-registration from researchers at all stages of their career.
