Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition affecting approximately 10% (190 million) of women and girls globally. It is defined by the presence of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, or ‘endometrium’, growing outside of the uterus involving peritoneum (lining of the pelvis and abdomen), ovaries and other organs such as bowel, bladder, liver and diaphragms. The classical symptoms include pelvic pain, painful periods, and infertility. Endometriosis causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in life-impacting pain, formation of scar tissue, adhesions, and ovarian cysts.
Endometriosis is a complex disease with several hypotheses to explain its origin. Currently, there is no known cure for endometriosis, with most treatments only aiming to ease symptoms. Recurrence of endometriosis is common after both medical and surgical treatment. Further, access to this treatment is limited in low- and middle-income countries. Endometriosis still requires global research and public awareness to streamline prevention, early diagnosis, and improved management of the condition.
This collection aims to increase awareness and provide a platform for research in endometriosis, to create a space of innovation, shared knowledge, and open discussion in the field.
