About this Collection
This TDR Gateway brings together research undertaken in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by local researchers. They conducted operational research on data collected during emergencies, outbreaks and the pandemics concerned with Ebola (2013-16), Lassa fever (2022-23), and COVID-19 (2020-23).
These data were available in either local medical records or via international data repositories. Ebola related data are contained in the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) Ebola Data Platform: https://www.iddo.org/ebola/data-sharing/accessing-data
And for COVID-19, these are available in the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC): https://isaric.org/research/covid-19-clinical-research-resources/accessing-covid-19-clinical-data/
The Collection is part of TDR’s efforts to enhance research capacity in low-income countries for better outbreak response and future preparedness. TDR, in collaboration with WHO's Emergency Medical Teams, supported this research (https://www.who.int/emergencies/partners/emergency-medical-teams).
We were also very conscious of the fact that researchers from these countries – where diseases such as Lassa fever and Ebola are endemic – have limited opportunities and the capacity to access and use data that are contained in these international repositories. The research projects were supported through the TDR Structured Operational Research Programme (SORT IT) https://tdr.who.int/activities/sort-it-operational-research-and-training
This programme begins with local stakeholders, often within the Ministry of Health, identifying locally relevant research questions they want answered and the identification of an individual to carry out the work. These SORT IT participants are usually frontline clinical workers, doctors or community health workers, and so with operational research they can make recommendations based on their findings such that the implementation is already embedded within the health system. For most of these papers the researchers have also developed Lightning video presentations of less than 3 minutes and these are available from links in the papers below the abstracts.
