About this Collection
The 21st European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB2022) took place in Sitges (Barcelona, Spain) from 12th-21st September 2022 under the motto Planetary Health and Biodiversity. The programme hosted a selection of virtual and face-to-face workshops and tutorials named New Trends in Bioinformatics by ECCB, followed by four days of a scientific conference in face-to-face format (18th-21st September).

The main conference featured talks by top keynote speakers and selected delegates about their ground-breaking publications across the fields of bioinformatics, computational biology, biology, medicine, artificial intelligence, environmental sciences and systems biology.

The work presented at the conference was organised into five themes (Data, Genes, Genomes, Proteins and Systems) and was included in the following tracks:
  • Proceedings: talks about manuscripts published in the conference special issue (https://eccb2022.org/welcome/).
  • Highlight Papers: presentations of recently published manuscripts.
  • Applications: description of software, services and infrastructures developed for beyond-academia applications.
The programme also hosted a new track on “Climate Crisis and Health” that covered diverse themes across biodiversity and infectious diseases related to the climate emergency. ELIXIR led sessions to discuss their varied outputs and services, including projects organized with the Latin American Bioinformatics Societies. Additionally, the programme included a session on institutional talks, and the organisation Bioinfo4Women ran a Birds of a Feather gathering on sex and gender biases in technology and artificial intelligence. The conference also included poster sessions to promote lively discussions on participants’ research projects.

The 7th European Student Council Symposium (ESCS 2022) was organised in parallel with ECCB 2022. The symposium provided a space for students and young researchers to present their work in computational biology and bioinformatics to an international audience. This collection is dedicated to publishing posters and slides presented at ECCB 2022. We warmly encourage ECCB 2022 presenting authors to share their work here.
